Home / The Story Behind KitMaii

KitMaii (pronounced Kit-my) translates to 'think new' or 'new way of thinking’ in the Thai language.

Our family lived in Asia for many years where we saw a lot of plastic!

Living in a developing country we expected to see a lot of plastic, disposable single use items and packaging waste and we certainly did!  We also observed however that when campaigns were launched to clean up the environment, the people were keen to get behind these projects and work hard to make improvements quickly.

We were sad to see recycling going into landfill

We were shocked to learn how much recycling actually goes to landfill and that at the time Australia was sending a lot of its' waste offshore rather than dealing with it here.  Thankfully that isn't happening now and we are creating programmes here to deal with the waste, but with the collapse of Redcycle, people are feeling very disappointed.  Recycling actually makes people feel great, they like to get involved and believe they are making a contribution.  Understandably people are very disappointed when they learn what they think is happening isn’t actually the case.

We knew it was time to focus on doing our bit!

You may be aware it can take 10 to 1,000 years to break down plastic bags or 450 years to break down plastic bottles.   Once that happens the problem isn’t solved. The plastic breaks down into tiny pieces which can get into our soil and waterways and cause problems for crops, farm animals, wildlife, fish, sea creatures and eventually us.   So it really is best to try to avoid this in the first place.

We realised we wanted to try to do our bit and try to do our best, so KitMaii was born in an attempt to focus on using less single use items and adopting a mindset of reduce, reuse, recycle and up-cycle.

Little changes can make a big difference

Our online store features reasonably priced, reusable, ethically produced items for home, shopping and living.  We stock our own products and items from other small sustainable brands who are also trying to make a difference.

We care about the environment and this also goes for our packaging materials. We avoid using plastics and aim to create as little waste as possible.  We use 100% compostable mailers, recyclable boxes, acid-free and FSC certified tissue paper and even compostable tape.  Where possible, we aim for you to be able to reuse the packaging again when you receive your orders.

The future is in our hands

We truly believe the real problem of plastic waste starts where it is created and the producers should be responsible for its use and lifecycle.  However, it is going to take a long time for legislation to be passed for this to take effect, so in the meantime, what we do in our own lives can have a significant impact.

We know the way we shop, the choices we make in our daily lives, our own environment, our homes and workplaces can make a difference. If we actually make an effort to change our habits and create less waste there will be less to dispose of.

We hope you will join us in being more mindful of what we are doing and help to improve our environment and the world we are leaving for our children and the generations to come.  Please give us feedback, your ideas and follow us on Social Media.  The little changes we all make can make a big difference.

The future is in our hands.
