KitMaii (pronounced Kit-my) translates to 'think new' or 'new way of thinking’ in Thai language.

Our family lived in Asia for many years where we saw a lot of plastic!

Living in a developing country we expected to see a lot of plastic, disposable single use items and packaging waste and we certainly did!  We also observed however that when campaigns were launched to clean up the environment, the people were keen to get behind these projects and work hard to make improvements quickly.

The resistance by some people to BYO Shopping Bags was surprising

On returning to Australia we were surprised at the situation here.  The resistance by some people to BYO shopping bags to supermarkets was incredible  - many other countries banned single use plastic bags years ago and people just became creative!

Are you aware it can take 10 to 1,000 years to break down plastic bags or 450 years to break down plastic bottles?   Once that happens the problem isn’t solved. The plastic breaks down into tiny pieces which can get into our soil and waterways and cause problems for crops, farm animals, wildlife, fish & sea creatures and eventually us.   So it really is best to try to avoid them in the first place.

Did you know a large percentage of our recycling goes to landfill?

We were shocked to learn how much recycling actually goes to landfill and that Australia was sending a lot of its waste offshore rather than dealing with it here.  Not only can it be recycled as other commodities, it creates approximately 9 jobs for every 10,000 tonnes of waste utilised.  Australia has been a world leader in recycling projects for items such as newspapers, but for a developed country there are definitely some areas we have some catching up to do.

Recycling actually makes people feel really good.  They really like to get involved and feel they are making a contribution and are very disappointed to learn what they think is happening isn’t actually the case.

We knew it was time to focus on doing our bit!

Our kids were actually educating us about reusable straws, drinking from repurposed jars, avoiding plastic bags, Op Shop shopping and reusing what we already have, so KitMaii was born in an attempt to focus on using less single use items and encouraging a mindset of reduce, reuse, recycle and up-cycle.

Little changes can make a big difference

Our online store features reasonably priced, reusable, ethically produced items for home, shopping and living.  We have a range of shopping and produce bags, reusable straws, silicone storage bags and drink bottles, reusable make up remover pads and reusable bamboo cutlery sets.

The future is in our hands

We can blame the system, the council or the government but at KitMaii we truly believe it starts with each of us as individuals.  The way we shop, the choices we make in our daily lives, in our own environment, our homes and workplaces. If we actually make an effort to change our habits and create less waste there will be less to dispose of.

We hope you will join us in being more mindful of what we are doing and help to improve our environment and the world we are leaving for our children and the generations to come.  Please give us your feedback, your ideas and follow us on Social Media.  Little changes can make a big difference; the future is in our hands.
